Poetry Reader Position

We’re looking to add one additional, very specific member to our Coastal Shelf Crew: a poetry reader.

What’s Expected: Duties are mild, just reading and making notes about what you’ve read, and we’re realistic, we all have lives, so the reading is largely at your own pace (aside from our ‘final round’ packets which I ask to be judged in roughly a week). We also are just wrapping up our extended contest reading window, so we’ll be all-hands-on-deck to read those pieces during the end of this month and through April which is exciting.

What I’m looking for: I am specifically looking for someone with experience reading somewhat ‘academic’ poetry, not cutting-edge innovative so much as layered and quick moving. Poets like Dean Young, Yusef Komunyakaa, Brigit Pegeen Kelly, Robert Cooperman, Nick Flynn, Campbell McGrath, Emma Bolden, Alison Joseph… An MFA/MA is not required by any means, but I’d say it’s definitely a plus.

If you’d like to apply for the position please send us a message at coastalshelfmagazine@gmail.com answering a couple brief questions:

Interview
1) Who are some of your favorite poets (right now, we understand lists like these are fluid).
2) What are the main factors you look for in a ‘good poem’.
3) What are some of your favorite journals (if you have any).
4) Are you willing to also read fiction in our ‘final round of consideration’ packets?
5) Tell us a little about yourself, whatever you think we’d be interested to know/would help you perform in this position.

I hate writing things like this, we’re very chill, I promise. If you have any questions just shoot us an email. Thanks and have a great weekend!
